How to Identify the Most Common Types of Cockroaches
American Cockroach
American cockroaches are reddish brown and approximately 1 3/8” to 2 1/8” long.
This type of cockroach is most common in larger commercial buildings such as:
- Restaurants
- Bakeries
- Grocery stores
- And more
Both males and females are fully winged (male wings extend beyond tip of abdomen) and are poor fliers.
German Cockroach
German cockroaches are light brown to tan approximately 1/2” to 5/8” long. The females are darker than male and they have a broader abdomen. This type of cockroach is rarely seen gliding or “flying.”
The most common areas these are found are:
- Kitchens
- Bathrooms
- And areas where people eat and drink
German cockroaches require more frequent pest control services because they have such a rapid reproduction rate. In order for the treatment to be successful, at least 95% of the population must be eliminated on the initial service.
Oriental Cockroach
Oriental cockroaches are also referred to as “Black Beetle” or “Waterbug.” They usually have shiny black coloring but may also be a dark reddish brown.
The most common in areas you will find oriental cockroaches is under:
- Debris
- Stones
- Leaves
- And wall / porch voids
Males are approximately 1” and females are 1 1/4″. The male’s wings cover about 75% of abdomen. The female’s wings are greatly reduced with resemble nymph stage and adults do not fly.
Do Cockroaches Bite?
While cockroaches generally prefer to shy away from humans, there are circumstances when they will bite. For example, if a cockroach feels threatened or is unable to find food, it may resort to biting.
Cockroach bites often occur at night, when the insects are most active. They typically target areas with thin skin, such as the ankles or wrists. Bites may also be directed at young children because of their tendency to have more food residue.
What Does a Cockroach Bite Look Like?
Cockroach bites usually result in small, red bumps that may be itchy or painful. In rare cases, bites can become infected. Compared to bed bug bites, they tend to be larger.
One telltale sign of bedbugs is clusters of bites. Cockroach bites are much more likely to be isolated or more further spaced out.

While professional roach control services are highly effective in eliminating cockroach infestations, there are additional steps you can take to prevent and get rid of cockroaches:
- Keep your home clean: Cockroaches are attracted to food and water sources, so it's important to keep your home or business clean and free of potential food or water sources. Regularly clean your kitchen, dining area, and other areas where food is prepared or consumed.
- Declutter: Cockroaches thrive in cluttered areas where they can hide and breed. Declutter your home or business by getting rid of unnecessary items and keeping storage areas organized and tidy.
Store food in secure containers: Cockroaches can easily access food that is left out or stored improperly. Keep food in sealed containers, and don't leave pet food or dirty dishes out overnight. - Eliminate standing water: Cockroaches need water to survive, so fix any leaks, dry out damp areas, and eliminate standing water in and around your property.
- Seal potential entry points: Cockroaches can enter your home or business through small cracks and crevices. Seal any gaps in walls, floors, or windows, and fix any leaks or drips that could provide a water source for cockroaches.
